Join us at Kingston Market Place for HoneyFest, where the tradition of sharing honey continues with a lively procession from the towns of Norbeeton, Surbeeton, Malden & Comb, and Hampton Skep. Each town’s residents will carry a honey jar to Kingston Market Place, where they will converge to celebrate the unique flavours of their local honey.

From 12-3 pm, enjoy the bustling market where traders will be selling honey and honey-related products. It’s a sweet opportunity to savour the best honey our region has to offer.

The Origins of HoneyFest

HoneyFest has ancient roots, originating from a time when early villages, upon discovering neighbouring settlements, would celebrate by exchanging honey. Each village’s honey, infused with the distinct essence of local flora, became a symbol of their land and culture. The exchange of honey wasn’t just about tasting different flavours—it was a way to build bonds and foster friendship between communities.

These celebrations took place during the full moon, guiding villagers on their journey along “Bee Lines,” the straight paths they followed to the new settlement. As they walked, they would hum and buzz, announcing their approach. When they arrived, the villagers would feast, share their honey, and celebrate their newfound friendship.

This tradition of connecting communities through honey continued to grow, with larger HoneyFest gatherings held at central locations, some of which became significant landmarks. Over time, these Bee Lines influenced the routes of Roman roads, some of which are still visible on today’s maps as B roads.

HoneyFest is more than just a market; it’s a celebration of our shared history, community spirit, and the sweetness that binds us together.
